Pin: Golden Wattle
Golden Wattle – Scientific Name: Acacia pycnantha
This pin was modeled on the Golden Wattle which is the floral emblem of Australia. Interest in the wattle as a symbol of Australia was first invoked by Archibald Campbell who founded a Wattle Club in Victoria in 1899. Debate about it becoming a national emblem continued well into the 20th century with some believing that the waratah was more suitable. However it was the wattle which won out and in 1988, the year of Australia’s bicentenary, the wattle was proclaimed the official floral emblem of Australia.
Fun fact: Wattle Day is commemorated on the first 1st of September / the first day of Spring.
