Pin: Great White Shark
Great white shark – AKA ‘White pointer’ Scientific Name: Carcharodon carcharias
These awesome creatures of the deep are right up there on top of the food chain for good reason. They are the largest predatory fish in the world and can grow to over 6 metres in length. That big mouth isn’t just for show either, it is equipped with 300 serrated razor sharp teeth!
Popular fiction: A larger than life great white shark featured in Steven Spielberg’s 1970s film Jaws. Unfortunately the movie propagated the myth that sharks are hunting humans when the opposite is true. Over fishing and being caught as bycatch has caused their numbers to plummet. Great white attacks on humans are rare and considered a case of mistaken identity.
Conservation status: Vulnerable
